Series introduction
Follow the author’s argument
The WhatGodDoeth Study Series is built for readers who want the architecture of an important Christian book without losing the author’s actual argument.
Each guide compresses the source into a shorter path through its main claims, distinctions, examples, and turning points. The goal is clarity, not replacement. The original book remains the authority for what the author said.
That matters especially in Gentle and Lowly. Ortlund returns to one claim from many angles, drawing on the Puritans as he goes, and the weight comes from the repetition. This guide follows that movement rather than flattening it into a summary.
Use the guide to see how the pieces connect, then return to Ortlund whenever a text, term, or conclusion needs the full context of the source.

Open Guide Part Seven
Ortlund’s twenty-three chapters do not form printed Parts, but they do move through recognizable theological territory. This guide uses those seven movements as editorial Part divisions so readers can see the progression as they study. The Part labels belong to the study guide, not to Ortlund’s original table of contents.
How to read this guide
Four marks, four kinds of help
A small marker at the start of a paragraph tells you what kind of work that paragraph is doing.

How the chapter or unit is built: the sequence, distinction, or theological move that holds the material together.

The central idea to retain from the unit. Each study unit uses one Key.

Plain meaning for difficult biblical, theological, historical, or archaic language.

A meaningful connection to another text, chapter, doctrine, or lived implication. Guide-added biblical parallels, if used, are labeled Study Connection; otherwise the connection belongs to Ortlund’s own argument.
Read the argument in layers
- Follow the biblical text. Notice which passage Ortlund places at the center of each chapter and what he believes it reveals.
- Keep the voices distinct. Scripture, Ortlund, and the older writers he quotes are related but not interchangeable.
- Work the theology back out. Review & Work It Out and Can You Say It? ask you to reconstruct the distinctions rather than collect devotional slogans.
