Series introduction
Follow the author’s argument
The WhatGodDoeth Study Series is built for readers who want the architecture of an important Christian book without losing the author’s actual argument.
Each guide compresses the source into a shorter path through its main claims, distinctions, examples, and turning points. The goal is clarity, not replacement. The original book remains the authority for what the author said.
That matters especially in Mere Christianity. Lewis often advances cautiously: he distinguishes a clue from a proof, a doctrine from an explanatory model, and an analogy from the reality it is meant to illuminate. This guide preserves those limits rather than silently filling them with later theology or general Christian knowledge.
Use the guide to see how the pieces connect, then return to Lewis whenever a phrase, example, or conclusion needs the full context of the source.

Book Two
What Christians Believe
Christian claim: a good Creator, a world in rebellion, Christ, the Cross and Resurrection, and new life.

Book Three
Christian Behaviour
Christian behavior: virtue, society, desire, marriage, forgiveness, pride, charity, hope, and faith.
Open Book Three -
Book Four
Beyond Personality: or First Steps in the Doctrine of the Trinity
Divine life: the Trinity, Bios and Zoe, the Incarnation, putting on Christ, surrender, and new creation.

Lewis moves in four stages, and each one rests on the stage before it.
How to read this guide
Four marks, four kinds of help
A small marker at the start of a paragraph tells you what kind of work that paragraph is doing.

How the argument is built. The frame of the section: its claims, how they fit together, and where Lewis is heading.

The central idea. The one point to carry away from the section, stated plainly.

Plain meaning. A difficult passage, term, or reference unpacked in everyday language.

Where it reaches. Links from this section to Scripture, to other chapters, and to everyday life.
Read the argument in layers
- Follow the argument. Start with what Lewis is establishing and how each chapter earns the next step.
- Notice the distinctions. Watch the terms, objections, analogies, and limits that keep the argument precise.
- Work it back out. Use Review & Work It Out and Can You Say It? to explain it in your own words.
