Series introduction

Follow the author’s argument

The WhatGodDoeth Study Series is built for readers who want the architecture of an important Christian book without losing the author’s actual argument.

Each guide compresses the source into a shorter path through its main claims, distinctions, examples, and turning points. The goal is clarity, not replacement. The original book remains the authority for what the author said.

That matters especially in The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry. Comer diagnoses before he prescribes, and the practices at the end only make sense against the diagnosis. This guide keeps the two in the order he gives them.

Use the guide to see how the pieces connect, then return to Comer whenever a practice, term, or conclusion needs the full context of the source.

Four-section roadmap

The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry in one movement

  1. Part One

    The Problem

Hurry is more than a full calendar. Comer diagnoses a culture and an inner life trained toward speed, distraction, fragmentation, and chronic restlessness.

  2. Part Two

    The Solution

More time is not the answer. Comer turns to Jesus’ easy yoke, apprenticeship, a rule of life, and spiritual practices that retrain the person.

  3. Part Three

Four Practices for Unhurrying Your Life

Silence and solitude recover attention; Sabbath teaches stopping and rest; simplicity trains enough; slowing retrains the body away from compulsive speed.

Comer’s argument moves through three deliberate stages. Each stage answers the problem created by the stage before it.

How to read this guide

Four marks, four kinds of help

A small marker at the start of a paragraph tells you what kind of work that paragraph is doing.

  • How the argument is built. The sequence of claims, contrasts, diagnoses, and practices that carry Comer’s reasoning.

  • The central idea. Exactly one Key appears in each study unit.

  • Plain meaning. A difficult biblical concept, formation term, historical reference, or distinction clarified.

  • Where it reaches. A meaningful link to another part of Comer’s argument, Scripture, or lived Christian practice.

Read the argument in layers

  1. Follow the diagnosis. Notice what Comer means by hurry, distraction, desire, and formation before reaching for the practices.
  2. Follow Jesus’ way of life. Part Two argues that the solution is apprenticeship: arranging ordinary life around the easy yoke, a rule of life, and practices that train the person.
  3. Work it back out. Review & Work It Out and Can You Say It? ask you to reconstruct Comer’s reasoning in your own words. Unit response pages give you room to write, while diagnostic worksheets let you test the argument against the patterns of an actual week.
