Series introduction
Follow the author’s argument
The WhatGodDoeth Study Series is built for readers who want the architecture of an important Christian book without losing the author’s actual argument.
Each guide compresses the source into a shorter path through its main claims, distinctions, examples, and turning points. The goal is clarity, not replacement. The original book remains the authority for what the author said.
That matters especially in The Awe of God. Bevere distinguishes holy fear from being afraid of God, and the whole book turns on that distinction. This guide keeps it in view rather than letting the two blur together.
Use the guide to see how the pieces connect, then return to Bevere whenever a passage, term, or conclusion needs the full context of the source.
Four-section roadmap
The Awe of God in one movement
-
Part One
An Awesome God
Define holy fear by distinguishing it from terror, then enlarge the reader’s vision of God’s presence, greatness, and glory.
Open Part One -
Part Two
Revealed As We Are
Hold God’s love together with accountability; let holy fear expose hypocrisy, motives, and the reality of judgment.
Open Part Two -
Part Three
Irresistible Holiness
Show how fear of God displaces fear of man, turns the believer from evil, and joins grace to the pursuit of holiness.
Open Part Three -
Part Four
Our Response to God’s Word
Make holy fear visible through obedience: immediately, even when it does not make sense, without visible benefit, when it hurts, and to completion.
Open Part Four -
Part Five
Intimacy With God
Move from obedience to trust and friendship, distinguishing genuine knowledge of God from a Jesus reshaped around preference.
Open Part Five -
Part Six
The Treasure’s Benefits
Trace the promises, protection, legacy, wisdom, humility, and endurance Bevere says flow from treasuring the fear of the Lord.
Open Part Six
Bevere’s forty-two chapters move through six deliberate stages. Each stage prepares the next.
How to read this guide
Four marks, four kinds of help
A small marker at the start of a paragraph tells you what kind of work that paragraph is doing.

How Bevere’s argument is built: the sequence of claims, contrasts, warnings, and conclusions that make the section work.

The central idea to retain. Each study unit contains exactly one Key.

A difficult theological distinction, biblical concept, term, or reference clarified in plain language.

A meaningful link to another part of Bevere’s argument, to Scripture, or to lived Christian practice. Connection material is supplied by this study guide unless the paragraph explicitly says that Bevere himself makes the connection.
Read the argument in layers
- Follow the movement. Notice how Bevere moves from defining holy fear, to holiness and obedience, to intimacy, and finally to the benefits and endurance he says holy fear produces.
- Keep his distinctions intact. Fear of God is not the same as being afraid of God; grace is not reduced to pardon; intimacy is not detached from obedience; holiness is discussed both as a position received and as a life pursued.
- Work it back out. Review & Work It Out and Can You Say It? ask you to reconstruct Bevere’s reasoning in your own words before moving on.
