Series introduction

Follow the author’s argument

The WhatGodDoeth Study Series is built for readers who want the architecture of an important Christian book without losing the author’s actual argument.

Each guide compresses the source into a shorter path through its main claims, distinctions, examples, and turning points. The goal is clarity, not replacement. The original book remains the authority for what the author said.

That matters especially in The Man in the Mirror. Morley works issue by issue, and each chapter asks a man to be honest about one of them before moving on. This guide keeps that order rather than gathering the conclusions on their own.

Use the guide to see how the pieces connect, then return to Morley whenever an issue, term, or conclusion needs the full context of the source.

Morley begins with identity, then moves outward into relationships, stewardship, time, temperament, integrity, and finally change. The order matters. He repeatedly argues that visible problems are downstream from what a man believes, loves, fears, trusts, and refuses to surrender.

How to read this guide

Four marks, four kinds of help

A small marker at the start of a paragraph tells you what kind of work that paragraph is doing.

  • STRUCTURE identifies the architecture of Morley’s argument: the sequence, contrast, or distinction that makes the chapter work.

  • KEY marks a central claim or practical principle that carries unusual weight in the chapter.

  • DECODED explains a term, metaphor, cultural reference, or biblical distinction that can be easy to misunderstand.

  • CONNECTION shows where the chapter reaches into another part of the book, another biblical text, or ordinary life.

Read the argument in layers

  1. Name the problem. Start with the problem Morley says is actually underneath the visible symptom.
  2. Trace the argument. Notice the distinctions, metaphors, biblical texts, and practical steps Morley uses to move from diagnosis to response.
  3. Separate principle from illustration. Some cultural examples and statistics belong to the book’s original 1989 setting or its 2014 revision; this guide treats them as Morley’s evidence and illustrations rather than current 2026 facts.
  4. Look in the mirror. Use THE MIRROR pages to turn the chapter toward your own habits, relationships, money, time, temperament, integrity, and surrender.
  5. Work it back out. Review & Work It Out and Can You Say It? are designed to make you explain Morley’s reasoning rather than merely recognize his conclusions.
